Toward the end of it's season, when the grass is getting high enough to mow, I have a problem in that it's leaves are pulpier and juicier than they look, and footing gets pretty slick. Still... they're a welcome harbinger of Spring.Curoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13787089059420590432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468443419983490967.post-57068896438526590492016-11-29T21:10:36.615-05:002016-11-29T21:10:36.615-05:00This plant can be highly invasive. Where it has not yet spread I counted 30 species of native woodland wildflowers but in the scilla patches there are only 2-3 native woodland wildflowers that can compete. The area I'm speaking of is one of the most biodiverse remnants left in the city of Milwaukee but the areas where the scilla has taken over have been impoverished. Not worth planting as it has no natural predators to keep it in check the way it probably does in its native range in Eurasia. It must be hand-pulled from the beds along my pathways. It's uncontrollable. I dug two feet of dirt out of the one bed along my front walk and put in all new soil. I had just as much mushy brown foliage the next year. This stuff is unstoppable and has moved from bed to bed to bed. If it were just pretty flowers, it would be tolerable, but the ugly, mushy, brown, slimy foliage makes it necessary to spend a lot of time each spring carefully pulling it all out.
Mehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14511770398251956170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468443419983490967.post-11238724306364726012016-04-05T21:42:46.207-04:002016-04-05T21:42:46.207-04:00sure beats dandelions!!sure beats dandelions!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16698855506355374149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468443419983490967.post-54221219219483709572016-01-24T19:37:05.285-05:002016-01-24T19:37:05.285-05:00I don't know the miscanthus cultivar. They have, however, displaced almost all my Chionodoxas I planted with them originally as companions, and I do like the Chionodoxas a little moreso. I need to plant those Chionodoxas in their own group on another part of the property I guess. For those who don't like the fading foliage, remember that just about everything does this sort of thing (e.g. daffodils!!), and the squills are gone in just a week or two. Mow them down, rake them out, spade 'em in... you can't get rid of them anyway. ;-)
Budsyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09817742227843426543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468443419983490967.post-76278540534079224632015-12-30T05:57:32.162-05:002015-12-30T05:57:32.162-05:00Hello, i really like the miscanthus in the last pi...Hello, i really like the miscanthus in the last picture, the small rounded one, do you have any idea what cultivar it is?

I'm guessing it might be yaku jima, little kitten or adagio but if you know for certain then that would be useful as i have just the spot in the garden for one like that. 00264167https://www.blogger.com/profile/13048376040774874132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468443419983490967.post-83910395343497900042015-04-30T09:22:40.059-04:002015-04-30T09:22:40.059-04:00Invasive and destructive. By mid to late May you'll only be left with a dense carpet of wet mushy leaves which block any other plants from developing.

I also want to give fair warning for everyone's safety... Dense carpets in your lawn are extremely slippery.

The people who already have these plants are offering good advice.
